Somali Police Academy can now train over 500 more police cadets per year with support from EUCAP Somalia

A newly refurbished dormitory has been handed over to the Somali Police Academy this week by the European Union Capacity Building Mission in Somalia (EUCAP Somalia). The dormitory, which is in the Academy’s main area, holds 140 beds for cadets, increasing the number of police officers that can be trained at the facility.

EUCAP Somalia’s Head of Mission, Chris Reynolds, together with senior officials from the police academy, presented the completed building and dorm rooms to Police Commissioner General Abdi Hassan Mohamed Hijar, during a walk through handover ceremony.

The Commander of the Police Academy, Colonel Mukhtar Gaaboow Hassan, said the extra training facilities were welcome.

“Thanks to this renovation and supply of beds and facilities, we can now accommodate over 500 more cadets a year,” he said.

Mr. Reynolds said the dormitory had been completed in partnership with and based on the Somali Police Force’s own specifications using local suppliers, and would support greater roll out of a special unit of police called the Darwish.

“With this accommodation block, adding 140 more cadets per cycle, and 560 more cadets a year, more Darwish units can also be deployed to support civilian rule of law in areas reclaimed from Al Shabab, as part of the Somali Transition Plan,” the EUCAP Head of Mission said.

The renovated building, which has four dorm rooms as well as washing facilities, is part of EUCAP Somalia’s wider support to police development and capacity building.
